Would you like to work with dedicated colleagues in an interesting workplace with good benefits and working conditions? The Department of Special Collections is now seeking a paper conservator for the collection care workgroup.
Department of Special Collections
The Department of Special Collections has a mission to acquire, manage, and sustainably develop the special collections at Uppsala University Library (manuscripts, music scores, maps, images, older prints, and other printed collections with particular preservation value) for the benefit of education and research. The department's mission also includes disseminating knowledge about the collections and making them known.
You will be part of a workgroup focused on collection care. The group consists of conservators and bookbinders with specialist expertise in the preservation, restoration, and long-term care of the library's unique and culturally valuable materials.
Job Responsibilities
Within the framework of the position, you will plan, implement, and document both active and preventive conservation measures on the library's materials, primarily focusing on the map and image collections. Tasks may include mounting (new mounts and remounting) of artworks on paper, repairing and addressing tears, creases, surface wear, and ink corrosion, conserving photographic materials, and providing advice on storage materials and facilities, climate, etc.
Together with your colleagues within the organization, you will work on issues related to active and preventive collection care, exhibitions, and loans.
Since the work involves handling physical materials, heavy lifting may occur. In certain tasks (e.g., those involving contact with dust, dirt, and mold or the use of machinery), it is necessary to use protective equipment.
The position requires on-site work.
Qualifications
- Completed conservation training with a focus on paper conservation at a university or college equivalent to bachelor's or master's level.
- At least two years of experience in active conservation of artworks on paper in cultural heritage collections.
- Good ability to communicate in Swedish and English, both written and spoken.
Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. You are meticulous, structured, and responsible. You have a well-developed ability to plan, prioritize, and perform high-quality work within given time frames. You are self-driven while also collaborating well.
Desirable/meritorious
- Experience in active conservation of photographic materials.
